Teeth Whitening is a form of cosmetic dentistry mostly using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to lighten the shade of the tooth’s enamel which is stained. There are two types of stains you could be dealing with:
Extrinsic stains: these are the stains on the surface of your teeth. These are a result of exposure to dark-coloured beverages, foods and tobacco, and routine wear and tear. These are considered minor and can be removed with brushing and dental cleaning, but stubborn stains need a strong teeth whitening approach like the ones you can get at the Cosmetic & Laser Dentistry Centre.
Intrinsic stains: these stains are in the interior of the teeth caused by aging, exposure to minerals during tooth formation and/or excessive ingestion of fluoride.
Why our teeth discolour in the first place is due to many different reasons, some can be avoided and some just can’t:
Age: As we age, skin becomes looser, hair becomes grey and teeth discolour as well. Because of wear and tear and stain accumulation, by the time we’re 40 or 50 teeth will need regular maintenance. At 20 or 30 it’s easier to whiten teeth as stains are not so stubborn.
Translucency and thinness: These are in the genes. Some people have thinner and more transparent teeth while others have thicker and not so translucent teeth. Thinner teeth like our front teeth have less of the pigment that is necessary for bleaching.
Eating habits: A lot of what we eat can affect our teeth like red wine, coffee, tea, cola, carrots, oranges and other deeply-coloured beverages and foods cause considerable staining over the years. Also acidic food contributes to enamel erosion so the surface of our teeth becomes more transparent and the yellow-coloured dentin shows through
Smoking habits: The true tooth stain! Nicotine is not your teeth’s friend, it leaves brownish deposits which slowly soak into the tooth structure and cause intrinsic discoloration that’s not easy to clean up especial as you age and the more you smoke.
